Obama’s Performance Rating Levels Out As The Public Focuses on Health Care

Posted September 29, 2009

PERFORMANCE RATINGS: After the percent of Americans saying they are pleased with Obama’s performance as President hit a 62% high in June it declines to 55% in July and then levels out at 51% in August and 52% in September.

MAJOR PROBLEMS FACING THE NATION

Over four in ten (44%) Americans believe the problems facing the nation are so severe that they will not be solved no matter who is President.

American’s concern with healthcare has skyrocketed from 13% spontaneous mention in April to 20% in May, 19% in June, 24% in July 28% in August, and 36% in September – making it the second most frequent problem spontaneously named by Americans. The economy, mentioned by 64% of Americans, is the problem most frequently named by Americans.

Between August and September, the percent of Americans naming “lack of government leadership” as a major problem edges up from 13% in July to 15% in August and 17% in September.

As the national debates on healthcare and the economy heat up, the percent of Americans who say they lean Democratic slips five points from 48% in August to 43% in September, and the percent expressing no political party preference increases five points from 18% in August to 23% in September.

While the Democratic Party loses strength, the percent of Americans who report they lean Republican remains stable at 34% in August and September.

The nation’s Founders would be pleased if they could witness the present political turmoil. It would tell them the nation they “conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal” can endure. The relationship between the people and their nation they founded proves itself, time and again, strong enough to contain intense controversy.

True, there are many bloody incidents in our past – riots in Detroit, World War I veterans riots, anti-war marches, but – in the 233 years since the nation was founded – there has been only one “war” among ourselves “testing whether this nation, or any nation so conceived and dedicated can long endure.”
